I'm sure you've noticed the trend toward front loading washers. Apparently, these are great cost savers. I'm no engineer but I suspect the savings is a byproduct of the design. The lower the opening, the more money you save. With a top loader, the clothes have to be agitated from side to side, requiring more energy. With side loaders, they are tossed up and down, creating more agitation with less power.
But why stop there? If we're going to save energy based on this theory, why not turn it up a notch? Or two? What about a bottom loader washer? Imagine how much agitation occurs when the water comes spilling down, instead of coming up from the bottom (top loader) or in from the side (side loader). The gravity of that water coming down on the clothes does the cleaning without any additional agitation. Pure genius!
The weight of the water on the clothes gets them much more cleaner with less water and less energy. Just don't open the washer during mid-cycle like the poor schlub above. Whooops
Bottom loader washers come in many shapes and sizes. Make sure you request the special ceiling mounting hardware. This will keep the washer high above you, so you'll have access to the clothes. Just remember not to open the lid until the wash is done. No peeking or you'll be drenched!
